Queen Finalists: More than just pretty faces
BYMARCWHITMORE
Each year there seems to be a tendency
to view the University Queen elections and
subsequent coronation as an elitist
popularity contest. This attitude further
tends to create a plastic image around a
seemingly shallow person when in reality
the chosen coed is a very believable and
approachable personality.
This year's finalists for University
Queen include Carol Elifritz Cyndi
Fisher Patricia Mahood Leslie Redman
and Sabrina Mathes and each of these
definitely fit into the mold of such a per-
sonality. THE BRAND recently Interviewed each
of the finalists in order to assess some
amount of this element in each of the
senior coeds.
Carol Elifritz is from Albuquerque
N.M. and has a double major in guidance
counseling and psychology. Carol has
worked on the BRONCO yearbook for
three years and she is the editor this year.
She is currently first vice president for
Student Foundation works in the Ad-
missions Office and is a member of Delta.
Without hesitation Carol said that her
favorite pastime is skiing an activity that
she has regrettably not done too much
since she came to Abilene. Carol describes
herself as "not a beginner I'm pretty
good but not an expert." She likes
downhill and powder skiing the most and
frequents Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado as
her favorite spot.
SABRINA MATHES hails from
Anaheim Cal. and is an elementary
education major. At H-SU Sabrina has
been involved in Epsilon Pi Alpha Student
Foundation and Citizens Advocacy. "I like
getting to know people and getting in-
volved with them" she said.
It turns out that Sabrina is also an avid
skier but she excels in water skiing. She
has been water skiing for several years
and her family tries to make it to Lake
Mead Nev. every chance they can.
Leslie Redman is an elementary ed.
major from Nocona and plans on teaching
special education. She is in Epsilon Pi
Alpha Student Foundation Student
Congress and acts as a student
representative to the Abilene Teacher's
Center Board.
LESLIE'S FAVORITE avocation is
what she calls "outdoor stuff." She likes
to go camping fishing and skiing. Her
family treks to South Fork Colo where
they get in some good camping and fly
fishing. "We're going skiing again this
Christmas" Leslie said with a smile.
Patricia Mahood is from Hobbs N.M.
and has a major in physical ed. with
English as a second teaching filed.
Patricia is in Delta Student Foundation
Kappa Delta Pi (national education honor
society) Alpha Chi honor society and Tri-
Beta (biological honor society). She was
nominated to Who's Who for the 1977-78
year and was a varsity cheerleader for
three years.
Patricia's main extra-curricular ac-
tivity is her involvement with aerobic
dance. She is quite accomplsihed and
teaches regular classes for the activity.
She has been doing this for two and one
half years and she said "I'm not tired of
it.. .because I enjoy it it's something I can
do well." Patricia stresses that aerobic
dance is good for women to get involved in
and she really enjoys teaching them.
CYNDI FISHER is a transplanted
Dallasite who majors in elementary ed.
and speical ed. She is in Epsilon Pi Alpha
Student Foundation the Council for Ex-
ceptional Children and Moody Center
Planning Committee. Cyndi has been
involved in BSU through Celebration
Singers Nursing Home ministry and as a
Bible study leader.

TEA visiting team examines H-SU
BY MINDY McNAIR
A visiting team from the Texas
Education Association (TEA) in Austin
has been on campus since Wednesday to
evaluate the H-SU Division of Education.
The law requires that a team visit an
institution at least once every five years.
The last visit to Hardin-Simmons was in
the spring of 1975. At that time the division
was given a three-year approval which is
comparable to many of the larger schools.
DUTIES OF the team are to look at and

alumni pals.
Those are but a few of the time-
consuming endeavors that will dominate
the H-SU campus in the next two weeks as
the University prepares for the 1978
Homecoming-Parents Day weekend Nov.
10-11.
TWO ORGANIZATIONS- the Fresh-
man Class and Kappa Pi have entered
the sign-display contest since last week.
That brings to 14 the number of student
organizations competing for a $100 grand
prize offered for the best interpretation of
the weekend's theme "Forty Acre
Frontiers."
Campus residence halls will be
decorated to display the theme during the
weekend and the winning dorm will
receive a giant banner signifying the
achievement.
All H-SU students faculty members and
staff are encouraged to dress in western
clothing on the Saturday of Homecoming.
The best-dressed male student female
student and faculty-staff member will
each receive a $25 cash prize.
"WE'RE ENCOURAGED by the
response we have had concerning the
contests and we look forward to involving
as many students as possible in our
Homecoming events" said Pam

assess the commitment of the school to
teacher education and to judge the quality
and effectiveness of the program. The
team must also consider the success of a
school's graduates since they are
products of the program.
The school must exhibit financial and
physical commitment to its teacher
education program. Quality among the
education division faculty must also be
maintained.
Admission standards to the teacher
program is another area that the team will
study. Some measure of screening and the
demonstration of certain skills for ad-
mission and graduation are important
considerations.
IN ADDITION to meeting these
requirements there must be evidence of a
cooperative relationship between the
institution and the public school sector. In
the case of Hardin-Simmons this would
include the Abilene Independent School
District and area schools.
White Horse Rider
try outs next week
White Horse Rider try-outs will be held
at 7 Wednesday afternoon Nov. 1 at the H-
SU stables on Grape Street.
All students regularly enrolled in the
University and in good standing are
eligible to try out and applicants should
furnish their own boots and spurs and
dress in casual riding attire.
Contestants should not wear dress suits.
Those planning to try out should notify
Dr. William Beazley's office prior to Nov.
1 if at all possible.
