Firebugs will get to see a dramatic
technique not often employed in modern
theater the use of a chorus as an integral
part of the play.
The Max Frisch play is representative of
a dramatic era known as the "theater of
the absurd" and uses the chorus to com-
ment on and describe the action.
Mechanically the chorus speaks in unison
and is structured like the traditional Greek
choruses.
THE LEADER of the chorus Billy Don
Smith describes his role as "the bridge
between the reality on stage and the
chorus itself."
Chorus members include Cathy Pittard
Nelson Greenfield Cameron Tate Jacque
Jones Dennis Anderson and Rick Strange.
They in turn act as a bridge for the
audience.
Although in Greek Theater the chorus
was used as a very serious element
Firebugs distorts the role somewhat.
'We're not always taken seriously
sometimes we are but often we play for
laughs" Prittard said.
"IN THIS we act to spoof the traditional
Greek idea...he (Frisch) uses the satire to
get his point across" Greenfield observed.
The chorus is very much a part of the
play as there are only two scenes out of
nine in which the chorus isn't present. In
fact there is one scene where they are a
part of the action. And when they are not
speaking they may even show some minor
facial reactions to the actors.
The theme of the play incorporates the
chorus as well. "You have to protect
yourself you have to eliminate evil...the
chorus plays the good guys but they are
overcome" Prittard explained
rttttl
PLAYING IN a chorus presents a dif-
ferent experience from what is usually
encountered in dramatic roles. "Our
character is in our linea...no subtext since
the action is dictated by the liaat..Jt's
strange to be confined to Just lines" they
explained.
An effort such as this requires a unified
group and the members of this chorus
seem to get along well together. "It's a
good play and it's fun to work with this
group" said Tate.
