Cowboys remain at No. 16
H-SU: TCSL zone champions
Three of the top 20 teams In the Midwest
rankings of the Intercollegiate Soccer
Association of America will be in Abilene
this weekend for the first annual Cowboy
Invitational soccer tournament.
Joining host and No.
16 Hardin-Simmons
will be No. 10 rated
Midwestern and No. 13
Avilva College from
Kansas City Mo.
Completing the four
team tournament field
is Texas Tech
university. SORANIDIS
ALTHOUGH HARDIN-SIMMONS is
rated behind Midwestern and Avilva
College in the ISAA standings the
Cowboys will bring the best team record
into the tournament. After winning the
regular season Texas Collegiate Soccer
League Division-II North Zone title last
week H-SU is 11-0-1 compared to MSU's 7-2-1
mark and Avilva's 9-3 ledger.
Hardin-Simmons battles Tech at 1 p.m.
Friday and Midwestern and Avilva tangle

at 3 p.m. H-SU gets its biggest test of the
season Saturday when it plays Midwestern
at 3 p.m. Tech and Avilva square off in the
1 p.m. game.
Tech brings an even 5-5-1 mark into the
tournament with two losses coining at the
hands of Midwestern and the No. 16
nationally ranked SMU Mustangs.
THE COWBOYS earned the right to host
the TCSL North Zone championship
tournament Nov. 10-11 by edging Stephen
F. Austin 2-1 and then thumping Austin
College 5-1 last weekend on the road.
H-SU will meet West Texas State at 2
p.m. Nov. 10 and if the Cowboys can match
an earlier 11-0 rout of the Buffaloes they
will meet the winner of the Austin College-
Stephen F. Austin game Nov. ll at 2 p.m.
Freshman goalie Gus Soranidis and
wing Tim O'Leary were the heroes in H-
SU's two-win weekend. Soranidis drew
praise from his teammates for his ex-
cellent play in the goal after regular Mark
Baker was injured midway through the
first half of the SFA game. Soranidis
earned a start against AC and surrendered
a single gosl.
O'LEARY BEAT SFA with two goals on
corner kicks a rarity in soccer.
Cowgirls win 20th game
end season Monday
INTRAMURAL NEWS
TODAY is the entry deadline for men's
three-man basketball.
Entry fee is $3 per team and fees will be
accepted until 5 p.m. today at the in-
tramural office in Marston Gym. Play
begins Thursday No. 2.
For the first time in school's history the
Hardin-Simmons University volleyball
team has recorded a 20-win season.
The Cowgirls downed Midwestern
Monday night in ACU's Moody Coliseum
for their 20th win of the season. The
record-setting season follows one of the
poorest coming last year when H-SU
finished 5-19
H-SU FOLLOWED up on that 20th win
Wednesday night in Wichita Falls when
the Cowgirls again topped Midwestern but
dropped a three-set match to Texas
Wesleyan.

The march to twenty wins began last
weekend in San Antonio where the
Cowgirls won a second place trophy in the
St. Mary's Invitational. Spiker Tonya
Lane was named the tournament's Most
Valuable Player.
H-SU drummed Texas A&I 15-13 15-13
behind Leigh Ann Long's 12-point effort
and slipped past Trinity 15-5 15-11 as Long
and Mary Grace Ray scored eight points
on serves.
HOWARD PAYNE upset the Cowgirls
15-12 15-13 before H-SU got back on the
winning track with a 15-6 15-7 thrashing of
host St. Mary's. Long and Kim Vinson
shared high-point honors with nine.
In the championship game Sul Ross
strengthened by the addition of a new
player defeated H-SU in three sets 15-8
12-15 15-8 for the tournament title.
The tournament left H-SU 18-11 for the
season but that turned quickly to 20-11
after Monday night's victories. Long had
10 points in the 15-7 15-7 win over Mc-
Murry while Vinson scored eight in the 15-
5 15-12 record win over Midwestern.
H-SU DOWNED Midwestern again
Wednesday 15-11 15-11 before being
toppled by TWC 11-15 154 15-7.
Cowboy netters
win MSU title
Hardin-Simmons University ripped pre-
tournament North Texas State 7-2
Saturday afternoon to take the cham-
pionship trophy in the Midwestern In-
vitational tennis tournament in Wichita
Falls.
H-SU captured the team trophy although
it tied North Texas and Texas Wesleyan
College with 2-1 tournament records. The
championship was decided on total sets
lost and the Cowboys were declared
champions with only 18 sets lost compared
to runnerup TWC with 22.
THE COWBOYS also took home four
individual awards. Chip Putnam won at
No. 2 singles Bob Grout at No. 3 Steve
Hoover at No. 4 and Jeff Woolsey at No. 5.
H-SU opened the tournament with an
easy 8-1 win over Midwestern duplicating
an earlier victory over the Indians in the
H-SU Fall Invitational. Texas Wesleyan
then downed the Cowboys 6-3 before H-SU
bounced back with the big win over the
Mean Green.

The Cowgirls recently finished third at
the Midwestern Invitational tournament.
H-SU disposed of North Texas State 5-1 but
dropped a narrow 5-4 match to Midwestern
and bowed to Texas Wesleyan 7-2.
GAIL WILSON earned individual honors
at No. 5 singles for the Cowgirls in the
tournament.
H-SU has split two dual matches
blasting rival Abilene Christian 8-2 but
then falling to Angelo State 9-0.
The Cowgirls host South Plains Friday
at 1 p.m. on the Strelch Tennis Courts
before beginning play in the Halloween
tournament.
COMPETING FOR H-SU will be team
captain Pam Campbell at No. 1 singles
former Abilene Cooper standout Debbie
Vaughan at No. 2 Baird's Cathy Dyer at
No. 3 letterman Nancy Waiters of Abilene
High at No. 4 Albany's Karen Hash at No.
5 and Wilson at No. 6. Rounding out the
roster are Mary K. Smith letterman Beth
Hodgson and La Vona Langley.
Campbell and Vaughan will play No. 1
doubles for Owens while Dyer and Hash
will be at No. 2 and Waiters and Wilson at
No. 3.
