Last week you printed a
letter from Ray that was addressed
to the Holliday City Council
Members. He stated that he had
visited Holliday and, “...we were so
disappointed in how the town
looked as a whole.”
I’m not a member of the
city council but I do have a few
things I’d like to say. I’m pretty
sure there’s more Ray disliked
about Holliday than just its
appearance. His letter made it very
clear that he was looking for a
school with “athletic”
opportunities maybe more than
“academic”. The Holliday ISD
emphasizes both.
Ray may have
underestimated the special
advantages that small towns can
provide today to growing and
curious children. Holliday as well
as the other cities in Archer County,
almost certainly don’t have the
“urban” look that larger cities can
afford. Please understand, I’m not
knocking what Ray appears to want
to provide to his children, but I do
question Ray’s overall, balanced
assessment of what Holliday has
to offer beyond the superficial.
Ray is absolutely correct
that the appearance of Holliday
needs work. What Ray didn’t seem
to grasp was how much the
appearance of the city has
improved in just the past few years.
I wish that Ray would have called
the mayor or council members and
asked what was being done to
improve the looks of the city.
Change is happening, but change
is slow when you have a small tax
base.
It’s a shame that Ray gave
up on Holliday. He might have
been an asset since he stated in
his letter that he had worked hard
for a community. Ray, here’s one
last comment on the subject. Come
back to visit Holliday in the future,
and watch the planned changes
happen. Maybe it will convince
you to take a second look at a
community that has wonderful
people, a great school, and room
for newcomers.

Holliday, Texas is not Dallas.
You people moving into Holliday
know this is a small town before you
move here. If you want a big city,
move to Dallas and leave us alone.
Some of us old timers want it to stay
small, it is already too big. We do
not need a zoning law.
