Optimist Staff
ACU's accreditation was renewed for 10
years and ACU Dallas received ac-
creditation for the first time during a
meeting Dec. 9 of the College Delegate
Assembly of the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools.
SACS is a regional accreditation
association of which ACU has been a
member since 1951 when it was still a
college. The Graduate School gained
membership in 1953.

proved reaccreditation after considering a
report compiled by a 10-member SACS
team that inspected ACU last spring.
ACU began preparing for the March
visit in January 1979. with a self-study
lead by Dr. Clinton Hurley professor of
English. The purpose of the self-study was
to reassess the university's objectives to
evaluate its attainments and to set up
regular continuing procedures for
planning its academic future in keeping
with (he requirements of the accreditation
association
The reaccreditation is valid for 10 years
and means that ACU met the 1 1 standards
of the SACS. Those standards include the
adherence to the written purpose of the
university the maintenance of good
educational programs and a good faculty
and the organization of financial
resources The standards also include
maintenance of good libraries student
services and organization of research
The team made several recom-
mendations on how to strengthen certain
areas of the university Dr Edward
Brown vice president of academic affairs
said "The administration agrees with all
of the recommendations made and we are
anxious to implement them ."
One of the recommendations was in
reference to the ACU purpose statement.
Brown said The SACS recommended that
the stated purpose be revised to reflect the
university's career vocational and trade
orientation with its commitment to liberal
arts
The SACS also recommended that ACU
devise a continuing mechanism to review
present and anticipated academic
facilities and to review the allocation of
resources Brown said the council of deans
is working out such a system.
