A daily newspaper recent-
ly carried a ftory about the
Navy Department awarding a
contract (or an. engineering
study to see whether it is
feasible to develop a subma
rine that could fly
The craft. according to
those in the know, would
prove valuable for spying
purposes It could fly into an
inland body of water, like the
Black Sea. submerge and see
what it could see
This sounds like a dandy
idea, but you can bet it's go
ing to cost us taxpayers plen
ty if the machine is built
If I remember correctly,
the Batplane. used by Batman
and fVobm of comic book
fame, has the very same ca
pabilities the government is
seeking
Don't get the idea that I'm
against progress in our de-
fense system because I'm not
In fact. I'm in favor of more
progress, and to prove my
point. I’m offering the gov
ernment, free of charge, a
couple of ideas for machines
to add to our array of wrap
on 1
1 A rifle that fires bullets
which seek out targets by
means of body heat This
should amount to a big ssv
mg in tax dollars spent for
ammunition Instead of using
thousands of rounds of ammo
teaching men how to hit a
target with a rifle, the mili-
tary. with the suggested wea
pan. could turn all our fight-
ing men Into expert marks
men almost instantly
2 A reducer ray which
could shrink an enemy's lank
or other motorised weapon
to about the sue of a bread
box This weapon, on a larg-
er scale, could provide a ter
rtfic defense against sneak
attacks by aircraft or missiles
Imagine how surprised an
enemy pilot would be when,
if on a bombing mission, he
and hia aircraft flew into a
reducer ray and suddenly
shrank to about two feet long
For a more peaceful use. the
government might find a way
to apply the weapon to the
national debt
