Biblical Studies Building rotunda dedicated

Esther Sowell was honored Saturday when the
82-foot high rotunda of the Biblical Studies
Building was officially named for her.
The decision to recognize Sowell Is part of the unl-
vcrsltys belief that the family plays an integral part
in the education of students for Christian leader-
ship throughout the world.
Dr. Royce Money university president spoke of
the unlversltys Iongterm emphasis on the family
ne saia -Dince its beginning in 1906 Christian
families have been an integral part of this universi-
ty. For all of us a part of who we are today is
because of godly people In our lives often mothers
and fathers grandmothers and grandfathers."
Sowells grandson Jim spoke of his grandmothers
love and dedication to raising her children and
grandchildren In the ways of the Lord.
"I have many fond memories of my grandmother"
Jim said. "She really was the first person who really
made me see someone who had committed their
lives to Christ. And even though she'd spoil us and
let us eat fudge and drink cokes right before bedtime
she wouldn't let us go to bed without reading the
Bible. We got to do things around town but she
wouldn't let us get away with missing church.
"She grew up with a relatively privileged life but
lived much of her adult life in u much 1p nrlui.
leged way. But I never heard her complain about
1
that She never lost her zeal for life or for Christ.
When 1 saw her commitment that was something
uuu siuck wnn me ior tne rest ot my lite.
Dr. William J. Teague chancellor said the dedica-
tion Is an example of the unlverehvV: Htn m rrr.
ognlze godly people.
"We're always looking for opportunities to recog-
nize groups of people who deserve attention" Teague
said. "But there was nothing that recognized a grand-
mother and we think grandmothers have a tremen-
dous role In the nurturing of grandchildren. This
seems to be a sparkling example of a grandmother
who cared for the Lord first and her family second."
Dr. Ian Fair dean of the College of Biblical and
Family Studies said "Today this dedication of this
magnificent rotunda in honor of a grandmother
continues this rich tradition of focusing attention
on the role of the family on the enrichment of the
students' lives. I am not aware of any university that
has ennobled lis mission by dedicating a significant
or prominent edifice to a grandmother. The dedlca-
tion of this rotunda therefore speaks richly to the
quality of this grandmother and the respect being
paid to her by her family."
The Esther Sowell Rotunda is the centerpiece of the
Biblical Studies Building. Undcr the rotundas vault-
ed ceiling the focal point Is the World Missions
Globe a rotating replica of the Earth wrapped by a
spiral staircase. The 1000-pound globe has more
than 200 points of light indicating the nations
where Churches of Christ is Involved in missions.
