Mary Margaret Burges. of the
Castro Garden Club, dressed in her
Alsatian black, dance dress and
black wide gro-grain ribbon hat

at L andmark Inn on the banks of
the Medina River, a state Historic
site built in 1X49 and donated to
Texas Parks and Wildlife Depart-
ment in 1974 by Ruth Lawler, an
original descendent.
Henry Castro, a gentleman of
French birth. Portuguese ancestory,
Jew ish faith and American citizen-
ship was the first to foresee the
eventual value of Texas real estate
He was most successful in getting
people from the Rhine Valley in
Europe particularly from the
French Prov nice of Alsace.
In Sept 1X44. the colonists cs-
tablished the town in a scenic bend
of the Medina River They built
their houses from stone and timber
found close at hand The
unsy mmeiric.il roof lines arc remi-
niscent of the homes they had left
behind. Nearly 100 of these unique
dwellings still survive, some still
used by descendents of the original
builders The entircold partoftown

sive
Julie McCray showed us through
her home which is the Charles
Naegelin House It was built in
1872 by Charles Naegelin. a Castro
colonist who arrived in Texas as a
child in 1X47 The house was pur-
chased in 19X6 by Julie from the
Estate of Melanie Naegelin.
Charles’ daughter-in-law. Julie
completely restored and furnished
the home w ith antiques in keeping
with the tradition of its designation
as a Castroville Pioneer Home.
The second house was most
unique as it did not have a porch
across the front. The hostess was
very informative. The two original
front rooms with fireplace were
furnished with antiques becoming
the era One can go to the basement
from the dining room A fireplace
in the dining room shows she loves
to cook on it. Her gas range was
about the first ever built
Our final stop was in St Louis
Catholic Church. The first church
building is still there It is well kept
but very small; built of limestome
and was started within a week of the
colonists' arrival.
After lunch in the Wild Rose, a
short meeting was held. The group
voted to give $50 to the Alexander
Memorial Library and a $50 Schol-
arship to the most deserving stu-
