This house originally had a front
porch that was set in and made the
living room very small Paul said if
four people w ere sitting in the room,
their feet would touch. They de-
cided to remodel the house and take
the porch into the livingroom.
Bruce Tiller was a building con-
tractor and married to Paul's Cousin.
Faye Cotulla Paul talked to him
about the remodeling He told Paul
he would do it for one-half price if
he could take all the furniture out
and for Paul and Elizabeth to leas e
town for two weeks
Paul and Elizabeth went to
Mexico City and found Jack and
Ruth Maltsberger from Cotulla al-
ready at the hotel they chose. Jack
had hired two taxi cab drivres who
at that time were also tourist guides
guides.
They were all together for three
day s before the Malthsbergerscamc
home. Paul and Elizabeth stayed
their two weeks. When they got
home the house was finished as it is
now and all furmturewasbackin it
Paul and Elizabeth have trav-
eled all over the world on travel
tours with some groups, w ith John
and Mray Pearl Reese and the
Claude
Jacks who lived here a while
where he was the Baptist preacher
Most of the time bill planned the
trips and was the guide Paul said
they knew where they would stay,
cat and go before they got there

Johnny and June Flowers went
to San Antonio Friday, June 19th to
get Johnny's hearing aid repaired
A B and Kathy Daughtrey and
daughters. Lon and Jennifer, have
returned from a two weeks visit in
Tampa, Florida with their son and
brother's family, Mr and Mrs Corey
Daughtrey and daughter, Erica.
Corey is in the Air Force and Sta-
tioned there Erica came home
with here grand parents to spend a
couple of weeks
Maiv in and Jessie Plocek spent
several days with Ed and Jeane
Plcek in Palacios The corn, cot-
ton and maize that area is beautiful
and abundant They were notified
of the death of Robert Jenkins so
they came home Sunday evening.
June 21st
The Lupe Jamies family had
their second family reunion on
Father's Day at the American Le-
gion Hall in Cotulla Lupe, now
deceased, came to Cotul la as a y ou ng
man in the 1920's. His wife. Sarah,
lived here; they met and married
Lupe was known for his work with
cement Sarah lives in Cotulla. She
is blessed with eight sons and one
daughter to come to see her and
care for her She and Lupe raised
and educated a fine family
George and Dorothy organized
things for the event They have
opened K's Dress Shop on N Main
St.
All of the family did not get to
come Of the original family. Carlos
and wife from Austin were present
w ith their son. Sergio from Dallas
Armando Jaimes was represented
by his son. Donnie and family from
Kingsville. Mr and Mrs Gilbert
Jaimes came from San Marcos and
Mr and Mrs Abel Jaimes and fam-
ily from Del Rio The only girl.
Sylvia Villarreal lives in Cotulla
bulls principal of a school in Zapata.
She was present w ith her family
George and Dorothy 's family were
present from San Antonio. A spe-
cial guest. Tony Corpus, was in-
vited from Del Rio to render enter-
tinment for crowd They enjoyed
her singing so much
"Tot" Marilyn Taylor Helmsley
who lives on a ranch out of Ozona
has returned from her annual trip to
an orphanage in Haiti The home is
one the other side of the mountains
from all the turmoil Sponsored by
the Church of Christ, the program
she represents is truly a Christian

When Joseph Cotulla's, Paul's
grandfather whom the town is
named after, ranch west of tow n
was sold to Barney Cox. Bill kept
ten acres w ith the old house on it
That is where he lives and loves it
Paul has given his interest in the
original Simon Cotulla Ranch in
Webband Dimmitt Counties to Bill
Paul's brother. Roy Cotulla and Bill
now own the land
Paul told me one day when I
asked him where they were going
that year "I don't know but Bill is
working on it I am going to be like
the old man who was supposed to
have a lot of money and had no
children When he died, his nieces
and nephews gathered to hear the
w ill read "Being of sound mind
and body. I w ill say, "I spent it all"
Paul and Elizabeth will be re-
membered for all the good things
done in their lives They gave gro-
ceries from the store to needy fami-
lies and never got paid for them
They gave generously to school chil-
dren vv ho needed money to attend a
school function They are big con-
tributors. I am sure, to the First
Baptist Church that the family has
attended for generations. There is
a home prepared for people like this
in the life here after Paul and
Elizabeth, you have so many friends
who truly love y ou

Paul and Elizabeth Green
Cotulla married in 1934 He was
operating a Piggly Wiggly grocery-
store on Front Street between John
Rees’es Auto Parts store and Ben's
There were three doctors in
Cotulla then. Dr Reeves. Dr Mor-
row and Dr Lightsey Dr Reeves
built this house He decided to
leave Cotulla and asked Paul about
buying it by paying him $25 a
month The deal was made and
Paul told Elizabeth he had bought
them a house She said "How-
many closetsdoes it have?" He was
so surprised. He said. “I don't
know “
Paul got three books of checks
from the bank and w rote them out
for $25 each per month until the
house was paid for It took twoand
onc-half books ofchecks. He gave
them all to Dr. Reeves with in-
structions to be sure he cashed
each months check and no more.
Dr Reeves died a few years
later and his wife needed $5000
which she borrowed from
Stockmens Bank in Cotulla and
put up Paul's checks for colatteral
Later, she borrow cd another $500
using the same collateral You
can't do that today
Paul and Elizabeth had one son.
Bill, who has been a great joy to
them He never married
They moved the store from
Front Street to the corner of Cciyer
Street and called it the Cotulla
Model Market Bill's now has the
location
Before he married, Paul attended
the University of Texas off and on
for eight years before he got his
degree During this time, he at-
tended the inauguration of three
Texas Governors; Maw Ferguson,
a man named Sterling and he
doesn't remember the other one
When I was Chairman of the
Democratic committee in La Salle
County; Paul and I each received an
invitation to a reception given by
Gov Preston Smith and Mrs Smith
at the governor's mansion in Aus-
tin My mother. Meddie Overby,
and I went As the receiving line
we were in got to Governor Smith,
he asked if I knew Paul Cotulla My
answer was "Yes He and Elizabeth
are coming but I haven’t seen them "
Mother and I spent the night at
the round Holiday Inn on the Colo-
rado River When we got back to
Cotulla. Paul told me what hap-
pened We was driving to Austin
and got sleepy They stopped and
Elizabeth drove He had a short
cigar stub in his mouth when he
laid his head back on the seat and
went to sleep He swallowed that
cigarstubb They spent the evening
