A Study of The Feasibility of Achievement Testing in Art
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report on the feasibility of developing curriculum-fair achievement tests
in art concludes on both positive and negative notes: such tests are feasible,
but would be costly to produce. The conclusion is based on a sequence of re-
search activities designed to test the feasibility in a rigorous and objective
manner. The activities included:
" Development and testing of a preliminary series of achievement tests
that indicated that objective testing for achievement in art is pos-
sible and that tests can be developed that meet prevailing psycho-
metric standards.
* Extraction of all measureable learner objectives from five curriculum
series in art for the elementary grades. The curricula exhausted the
universe of published curriculum series purporting to be discipline-
based.
* Organization of the extracted learner objectives into a uniform system,
so that similarities and differences among the curricula become evi-
dent, and commonalities among learner objectives emerge.
* Synthesis of a list of learner objectives that have some commonality
among the curricula. The common objectives supply the content for
new tests that would be curriculum-fair in terms of the student
achievements measured.
* Selection of'item formats that can be expected to measure achievement
of the common learner objectives with efficiency, validity, and
reliability.
The development of the achievement tests is seen as a costly endeavor in terms of
selecting the art images needed and their high-quality color printing. Further
developmental work awaits decisions weighing these costs against possible advan-
tages in the promotion of discipline-based art education.
