INTERFERON: What's up?
Chatting about alpha
by Matt EarnestWith hopes of learning how well alpha interferon is
doing these days we've been burning up those phone lines.
We wanted to stay abreast of Al's clinical and anecdotal
track record. To this end I spoke with William Sheppard, a
medical writer and founder of San Francisco's Project Re-
covery.
Matt Earnest: Are you a doctor, Mr. Sheppard?
William Sheppard: No. I'm a concerned citizen, and
I'm a medical writer.
ME: I've read many of your writings. In fact one of
your articles about AIDS as an autoimmune disease Is
going to run in this issue of NEWSource.
WS: Great.
ME: What can you tell me, or what has been your ex-
perience with alpha interferon?
WS: Well, I communicate regularly with Dr. Cummins
who discovered it, you know. It's a very good product.
...Last July I was working with a boy who had only
days to live. He couldn't eat; his family had been
called to the hospital to say their goodbyes. I had ob-
tained some alpha interferon and I gave him a small
dose, and it was remarkable. Within hours his appetite
had been restored. The next day he was out of bed --
he had been incontinent the day before. He started
walking, and in several weeks he got up to 12 blocks.
In 4 weeks he was asymptomatic.
ME: Gosh, that's almost sensational, isn't it?WS: Isn't it? It was incredible. Here was this kid, al-
most dead...
ME: Well, that's great. There's no way that everyone
would get those kinds of results though.
WS: No, and that's a whole other story.
I wasn't able to speak with Dr. Barbara Justice
directly, as I had hoped (at least not in time for my
February deadline), but one of her assistants told me
that, of Dr. Justice's considerably large New York
practice, "about half" are HIV patients. Every one of
them, she told me, is using only low dose alpha
interferon under Dr. Justice's supervision.
