Some people. You can tell them certain things over and over for years and they still refuse
to hear you. You can scream, cry, sing, or turn a cartwheel and your efforts are all in vain,
because people believe what they want to believe--even if what they want to believe is miserable.
But I'll stick my neck out. There just might be someone who's ready to believe it this time:
You can be happy by taking responsibility for your situation
and by refusing to sacrifice your quality of life.
A good attitude doesn't come easy. When you're up all night with a blinding fever and
diarrhea, the last thing you care about is peace and love and joy and all that crap. But the days
when you feel well don't have to be spent thinking about the days when you don't. You have to
convince yourself that your life and health are worth something to you and all the people who
care about you. We took our health for granted before. Now it's our most precious possession
when we have it. So what? That doesn't mean that we have to punish ourselves by worrying
about how long it will last. We're going through enough without adding self-torture to the list.
Try keeping a journal. Some people say it helps them to get hostile
feelings out and finished. Whenever you feel nervous or have stress (both are
very detrimental) jot down your feelings and let go of them.
R I Other people paint or draw. I even know a guy who keeps a coloring
o1 S book and crayons in his briefcase. You laugh, but he swears by it for
relaxation and relieving depression. How about a garden? Writing a novel?
R ORedecorating the house? Making something look good can make you feel
oom super, and it keeps your mind active so that you can't sit and ruminate about
how miserable you are.
Subliminal tapes are great too. People use them for a positive attitude,
depression, stress and other things. The best way to use tapes is to be very
regular with them. Listening to a good subliminal tape every night can help
you to believe what's already true:
You can be happy by taking responsibility for your situation
and by refusing to sacrifice your quality of life.
I'm sure you already know that these tapes talk to your subconscious; they help you talk to
yourself, and they work from the inside out.
So don't get bogged down. If you feel bad, do whatever it takes to feel better, and just feel
better. Don't worry about it; indulge in it. Start to measure yourself by how great the highs are,
not how pitiful the lows are. You do have some control, so use it, and don't forget how much
you're worth.
