JERRY KEENE FOR OREGON
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
The first Republican to be
recommended by the Victory Fund, Jerry
Keene is a moderate, pro-choice
Republican who is strongly committed to
civil rights. His grassroots campaign
emphasizes the successes of past Oregon
Republican leaders like Sen. MarkHatfield, who sparked
cross-over Democratic
support and produced
1 a n d m a r k
environmental and
social legislation in
the 1970's.
An ardent believer
in strong civil rightsprotection, Jerry endorses the Federal gay
and lesbian rights bill and would sponsor
and advocate a similar bill in the Oregon
House of Representatives. The chairman
of Oregon's Right to Privacy PAC called
Keene's candidacy "a turning point" in
getting a gay rights bill passed in Oregon.
During the last House session, Keene went
on record urging the Speaker of the House
to steer pro-gay bills to an objective
committee.
As an attorney, Jerry has extensive
experience in health-related legislation and
litigation. He drafted the proposal upon
which a comprehensive workman's
compensation reform bill was modeled.
Jerry believes that federal funding for
AIDS education, research and treatment
should be set at emergency levels to
reflect the genuine epidemic that is
threatening the nation. He intends to urge
statewide reforms to make affordable
health care available to more people.
The Oregon Republican party and the
House Republican Caucus have shown
great confidence in supporting Jerry. Jerry
is running a positive campaign
concentrating on important issues such as
health care and education. He is
outspoken in his disdain for the anti-gay
Oregon Citizens Alliance: "There are few
things more corrosive and harmful to the
ideas of the Republican Party than being
associated with the OCA." His victory,
and that of Gail Shibley, are urgently
needed to protect the gay/lesbian and
AIDS/HIV communities from the
insidious fanaticism of the OCA and their
allies.JERRY NEAL FOR OHIO
GENERAL ASSEMBLY
A progressive, pro-choice Republican,
Jerry Neal is running for the 23rd District
seat of the Ohio General Assembly. His
supporters and opponents alike agree that
Jerry's election will have a tremendous
impact on lesbian, gay and AIDS issues in
Ohio.
Pending Ohio House Bill 419 will
require medical professionals to report
their HIV status and will allow the state to
curtail their ability to work. Active in the
Stonewall Union Political Action
Committee, Jerry holds progressive
positions on AIDS and right-to-privacy
issues, and has participated in public
forums on gay and lesbian rights. He has
already been successful in getting a
Republican committee chairman to stall
action on Bill 419 in the Ohio Senate.
Neal's opponent, Mike Stinziano, has
voted against anti-discrimination
legislation for lesbians, gays, and people
with AIDS, and voted for Bill 419.
Jerry, a CPA who holds a Masters
degree from The Ohio State University, is
a successful businessman in the Columbus
area. He has worked on numerous
campaigns and has considerable
experience with fundraising for both
parties. The Republican party recruited
Jerry for this race, and
has enthusiastically
demonstrated itssupport.
Personable and
articulate, Jerry hasL
been actively involved
in door-to-door
campaigns, inner-city
groups, and professional and civic
organizations. His campaign is actively
building coalitions with groups
disenfranchised by Stinziano's
incumbency, a 20-year reign that has
served special interests at the expense of
the people. Jerry's progressive positions
on the economy, neighborhoods,
development, and education, his track
record as a community leader, and the
high level of support within the University
and gay and lesbian communities, make
him the strongest challenger ever pitted
against Stinziano.GERRY STUDDS
FOR US CONGRESS
Since coming out of the closet on the
House floor in 1983, U.S. Representative
Gerry Studds has remained committed to
his dual role as a powerful advocate for his
constituents in Massachusetts, and for
lesbians and gay men across the U.S.
Even though a partisan congressional
redistricting plan had eliminated much of
his established base of support, Studds still
won the Democratic primary by a large
margin. He now faces two formidable
opponents and has been targeted for defeat
by anti-environmental special interestgroups and well-
financed demagogues
espousing their
distorted idea of
"family values." His
conservative
Republican adversary,
anti-choice multi-
millionaire Dan Daly, has the strong endorsement of the
Governor and the advantage of running in
the State's most Republican district.
Independent candidate Jon Bryan, also a
multi-millionaire, opened his campaign
against Studds with blatant gay-baiting,
agreeing to debate Studds only if they can
discuss the Congressman's sexual
orientation. In a slanderous
misrepresentation of a past episode, Bryan
remarked, "No one has asked the
legitimate question about whether the page
Gerry Studds was censured for raping was
the only minor he has engaged." Bryan has
been running vicious anti-Studds attack
ads in newspapers and on television.
A staunch supporter of progressive
causes, Gerry has earned praise from
environmental groups for his tireless
efforts in preserving of this country's
wetlands and protecting the Endangered
Species Act. Long before it was popular,
Gerry advocated comprehensive, national
health insurance.
Long recognized as an articulate,
passionate and effective advocate of gay
rights, Gerry is an original sponsor of the
Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights Bill, the
Hate Crimes Statistics Act, the Americans
with Disabilities Act, and the House bill to
rescind the DOD directive banning
lesbians and gay men from military
service.n
