Tarleton got the shaft again. A
royal ripoff. But, nonetheless, a
. Common" practice ^when it comes
to TSU and the LSC.
To be s p e c i f.i c , TSU's
outstanding ba'sketbari player,
Isaac Atkinson, was almost totally
ignored in the All-LSC basketball
team selections made last week.
Atkinson, in my opinion, has
to rank as one of the top three
players in the Lone Star
Conference, yet he was neglected
on the first and second All-LSC
teams, earning only enough votes
fo receive honorable mention
status.
But I supppse as Tarleton
students, we should thank God
for even such a small favor as that.
■ The All-LSC vote has to rank
as one ' of the most blatant
•displays of ignorance I can
imagine, yet the situation smells
far worse when one considers that
the voters were coaches; men who
are: supposedly the most
knowledgable in the sport of
basketball.
Atkinson may have been the
victim of a situation that wasn't
totally due to a lack of
intelligence, however. The "vote"
probably was a typical political
manuever designed to direct
attention to the league
champions, instead honoring the
players that represent the best
LSC basketball has to offer.

In either case, one can picture
the .voting coaches laughing
sarcastically behind our backs at
how they had pushed good ol'
Tarleton around once more.
But despite their vote, the
statistics stand as ample evidence
that the Texans no. 40 (that was
Atkinson's number for those of
you who couldn't find time to
come to a TSU game because you
were busy driving up and down
the streets of Stephenville or your
home town) should have received
strong consideration for the first
team-and most certainly should
have gotten second team honors.
Perhaps a change should, be
made then, if players with
outstanding ability are not
receiving due credit.
Perhaps the voting should be
done by the players
thernselves-men who can judge
each other's abilities from
experience and who would be free
of the pressures that are obviously
applied to the coaches.
fylaybe just the top fifteen or
twenty players should be given an
all-inclusive All-LSC designation. .
But a cure is unlikely, for the
conference "fathers" are not
about to give up any of their
powers.
We can only hope that the
other schools in the LSC can take
it as well as they dish it
out-because if they ever let TSU
get on top, we'll have a lot of
kicking to do to get even.
