SAITT M1ARY S
Saint Mary's one of the earliest schools in Marfa/was
founded in 1912. In thle fall of 1912, Sister Edmoind and six
companions came to Marfa. It it believed t-hat they came from
Shafter, St, Mary's, the pioneer Catholic school, rose rapidly
into favor and prospered.l
The sisters have always given piano lessons to the
children. They have taught the children to sinr. All of them
(from kinder 'arden to the eighth grade) sing in their school!s
day rass. They had a choir that san-r at the 9 o'clock mass,
that included all of the children. They are taught very well
and if a boy or a girl does not study his lessons, he has to
stay after school and study for an hour.
The children study catechism, Brithemetic, geography,
history, and all the subjects that are taught in a regular
elementary school. They are also taught to act well in front
of people andgood manners.
Unlike an elementary school, children in Saint Mary's
celebrate holidays of obligation by not going to schoolon
that day. Holydays of obli~g.ation are days on which a special
feast day of a saint is observed. Some of the holydays are:
