Anticipation Is The
Worst Of It!
Franklin 1). Roosevelt's fa-
mous quote that "we have
nothing to fear but fear itself"
is so true. Born without the
cushioning fluid sack within
my knees, osteo arthritis has
worn the knees out. For years
I have needed total knee joint
replacement. But, partly be-
cause a doctor kept telling me
that I was too young for it, and
partly because of fear on my
part, I have put it off, and put
it off. I was, simply put, scared
to death of the idea of having
my leg bones sawed off!
I have spent the last few
years lying awake until two or
three in the morning, in pain. I
have watched my world shrink
smaller and smaller until shop-
ping, vacationing, gardening
and even simple tasks such as
housekeeping have become too
painful to bear. Then, my limp
was so severe that I herniated
my back because of the way I
walked!
Finally, a new doctor put
things in a different light. He
pointed out that yes, I was
young for a knee replacement,
but would I rather be crippled
now or in my 70s or 80s. Hey,
there's no guarantee I'll even
he here then!
So, I scheduled a left knee
replacement. In the weeks be-
fore hand I became a "basket
case". Just talking about the
surgery made my teeth chat-
ter, literally. I couldn't do any-
thing hut dread the terrible
surgery coming up. It's a won-
der my staff didn't kill me, I
was so cranky.
The morning I checked into
the hospital I was in a foul
mood, and kept wanting Tho-
mas to let me leave. I was ready
to back out. To make it worse,
no less than three people at the
hospital mentioned how tough
this surgery w as. I really liked
the little nurse who said "and
many people complain more
about the sore throat from the
tube in their throat than they
do about the procedure. But I
see you're scheduled for a total
knee....so you'll be in lots of
pain and won't notice the sore
throat. What a comfort!
Finally, I awoke from the
surgery. It hurt. For two days
it hurt bad. But guess what,
folks. After that I could walk
on the knee w ith a walker and
it isn't as painful as it was be-
fore the surgery! Yes, I’ve got
a lot of physical therapy to do.
Lying in a machine that bends
my leg back and forth for 6
hours a day is a bore! But guys,
my knee is stronger now than
it was. The pain is less than
before, and it has only been
two weeks. I'm excited. I 'm
hopeful that my life is going to
blossom outwards once more.
And I'm probably going to do
the other knee within a few
months.
My point? Nothing was
worse than the dread and an-
ticipation of a procedure I was
terrified of. But the reality was
a lot less than I thought. Which
leads me to thinking that it's
usually that way. Very few
things in life turn out to be as
bad as the dread and fear of
them. I'm going to try and re-
member that when next faced
with the unknown!

Four sign up for Talco-Bogata
School Board race
There are four candidates for the
Talco-Bogata School Board this year.
FromTalco incumbent, Eddie Brown
and Earl Hale will run for position 3.
From Bogata incumbent Mark Hare
and George Marshall will run for
position 6.
Eddie Brown, the present presi-
dent of the board, has served as a
member for 16 years. Eddie, the son
of the late Jack and Beatrice Brown,
received his schooling at Talco El-
ementary and High School before
entering the U.S. Navy where he
served in Viet Nam. Eddie is em-
ployed at Texas Utilities Mining
Company. He and his wife, Nancy,
live in the Maple Springs community
and attend the Maple Springs Church.
They have one daughter and son-in
law, Kim and Paul Anderson ofTalco
and one son. Jack , who resides at
home and are expecting their first
grandchild in September. Kim is an
LVN at Red River Haven in Bogata.
Her husband Paul is employed as a
truck driver. Jack is a biology/pre-
medical college student and is em-
ployed at Sherwin Williams in Mt.
Pleasant. All are graduates of River-
crest High School.
Brown said, "I have seen many
changes in my years as a board mem-
ber. Some have been good and some
have not but we have more to be
proud of than most schools in Texas".
He stated he would like to see the
schools strive to maintain the
exemplementary campus ratings they
have had in the past years, make
quality education available to every
child and would like to continue to be
a part of making decisions for the
future of the Talco-Bogata schools
and taxpayers of the communities.
Our excellent teaching staff and the
discipline maintained on our cam-
puses shows in our academic and
athletic programs. We have a high
rate of students who not only attend
but graduate from college. The dis-
trict has been very fortunate in hiring
ex-students who have returned and
have made excellent teachers in the
school system proving the quality of
education. Our Agriculture depart-
ments are one of if not the best in the
district. Many students are working
at jobs today using the skills they
received at Rivercrest. My main plea-
sure in serving as a board member
has been every graduation I have
been a part of and the pride I've felt
for every student who has completed
their high school education”.
Earl Hale ofTalco is the challenger
for position 3 on the board. Earl has
been in Talco since 1964. He is mar-
ried to Rena Kay Hale and they have
4 children ages 12,10 and twin 4 year
olds. He is a member of the Seventh
Day Adventist Church. Earl is 40
years old and has attended classes at
S.W.A. University, Paris Junior Col-
lege, Northeast Texas Community
College and is working toward an
Electrical Engineer degree. He is a
Texas Licensed M.T. He has been in
the electrical construction and main-
tenance business for 25 years. He has
a Master Electrician diploma and
holds two city electrical licenses. He
is the owner and president of Hale
Electric, Inc. He is the son of Ed and
Annette Hale of Talco. His hobbies
are canoeing, scuba diving and na-
ture activities with his family.
Earl said, " I would like to see the
Talco-Bogata ISD students have a
quality education to help them in
their future, promote unity in the com-
munities, minimize tax increases eco-
nomically, promote necessary repairs
and new construction on the cam-
puses and improve communication
among Talco-Bogata ISD members".
Mark Hare is the incumbent in
position 6 on the Talco-Bogata Board
of Trustees. He is a lifetime resident
of the area and a- graduate of
Mt. Vernon High School. He and his
wife Debbie have been married 22
years and have three daughters, Katie
, a senior at Rivercrest High School,
Molly, an 8th grader at BogataJunior
High and Sarah, a 5th grader at Bogata
Elementary. Mark is a self-employed
dairyman/rancher. The family attend
the First Baptist Church in Bogata.
Mark is a member of the Rivercrest
Athletic Booster Club, president of
the Bogata Baseball/Softball Asso-
ciation, coaches Little Dribblerteams
and Dixie girls softball and is presi-
dent of the Fairview Cemetery Asso-
ciation He said, " I am interested in
giving the children of our district the
very best education possible. I have
been a loyal board member attending
all meetings and board training meet-
ings for the last 3 years. My family
and I attend as many of the events
held at the schools as possible and are
active in as many as we can partici-
pate in. I have enjoyed serving with
the present board members and hope
to continue to serve".
George Marshall is the challenger
for position 6on the board. He is a life
long resident of the school district,
graduated from Rivercrest High
School in 1970 and attended East
Texas State University and gradu-
ated with a B.S. in Business Admin-
istration in 1976. He is a self-em-
ployed rancher and owns Wild Class
Inc., which has produced professional
bull ridings and country music con-
cert tours across the southern half of
the United States for the last lOyears.
George and his wife, Robbi, have
two children, Tonya Williams of
Cooper and Tee Green of Mt. Ver-
non, both of which graduated from
Rivercrest High School.
Marshall said, " I have found that
usually there are several options to
most problems and I believe that the
tax payers in this school district should
be involved in deciding which op-
tions to take. We all know that we
need improvements on all campuses.
We all know that we need to provide
exceptional teachers and the latest in
technology so that each and every
child has the opportunity to learn to
the best of his or her ability. I think
together we can take the right op-
tions, with education being our num-
ber one concern. I would consider it
an honor to represent the people of
the Talco-Bogata School District".
Absentee voting will begin April
14,1999 and will be held at the Board
of Trustees room at Rivercrest High
School every Monday through Fri-
day from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Vot-
ing will end April 27, 1999. The
election will be held at Talco and
Bogata Schools on May 3,1999. Polls
will open at 7:00 a.m. and will close

Water bill to show new item
Last month, Bogata water custom-
ers received a new water bill. Soon a
new i item will be listed on the bill.
The fire insurance rates are based
on criteria which includes the avail-
ability and quality of equipment of
the Volunteer Fire Department. The
equipment must be updated so that
the aging of the equipment does not
cause your insurance rates to in-
crease. The fire insurance rates would
have increased in Bogata if a new fire
truck had not been purchased.
VFD contribution shown on the
bill is $2.00. This is a voluntary do-
nation for the new fire truck. If you
do not wish to contribute, please de-
duct the amount of the contribution.
If you have any questions, please
do not hesitate to contact any mem-
ber of the Volunteer Fire Department,
the Mayor or your council members.

88 tournaments and won trophies in

the coach at Kilgore Junior College
and he plans to support her and her
